EMÜ Equine Clinic of Estonian University of Life Sciences is the only inpatient clinic in Estonia offering high quality 24/7 emergency care and regular medicine services to horses. The clinic is equipped with video cameras enabling to constantly monitor the animals in intensive care units and isolation boxes, where horses possibly infected with a contagious disease are kept. Minor diagnostic procedures and treatment can be also provided in the stable.
Our equine clinic has a fully equipped surgical suite to perform various surgical procedures and a full-size indoor arena to conduct lameness examinations all the year round. For diagnostics, we use x-ray/radiology, ultrasonography, and video endoscope. Different laboratories are in the same building, where hematology, parasitology, and microbiology sample examinations are completed. Additionally, we constantly and efficiently cooperate with pathology and morphology departments of the clinic. If necessary, samples may be sent to laboratories in other countries.
Practical training of veterinary medicine students is conducted in our clinic. To improve the quality of their education, students perform diagnostic and treatment procedures under careful supervision of our doctors.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
Your scheduled visit to the EMÜ Equine Clinic begins when you pull up to the driveway. Please park your vehicle in the driveway, come into the reception area and check in at the front desk. After a small amount of paperwork, a nurse or student will help you unload and walk your horse to its assigned stall.
Often, you may leave your vehicle and trailer right in the driveway but, if the lot is full, the receptionist will provide you with directions to nearby longer-term parking where overnight parking for trucks and trailers is also available.
After your vehicle is parked, a nurse and student will work together to conduct an examination of your animal and will take a medical history. We appreciate your patience and understanding in allowing our veterinarians-in-training to interact with you and your horse. This is the only Equine Clinic teaching hospital in Estonia, and we are committed to provide the country with the best veterinarian which will serve you in the future.
Next, the student will leave to report their findings to a veterinarian and a senior clinician, who will return with the student to perform a second, comprehensive examination. The veterinarian will discuss all the findings with you.
Working together with you, a plan for further diagnosis and treatment of your horse will be developed. Patients that require surgery or advanced tests will often be admitted to the hospital at the conclusion of their initial appointment. Patients admitted for surgical procedures often need to remain hospitalized for several days or longer. Horses with conditions that do not require hospitalization will be discharged with detailed written instructions and a summary of the exam findings, which will be sent the next few days after the appointment. A copy will be sent to your veterinarian who was referring the horse to the clinic.
