Hospitalization

In some cases, a veterinarian may determine that a horse requires hospitalization for further treatment and monitoring. At the EMU Equine Clinic, all hospitalized horses receive dedicated care, and a veterinary nurse is present on site at all times to ensure their well-being.

We maintain regular communication with horse owners throughout the hospitalization period. Unless otherwise agreed, a veterinarian or a veterinary medicine student involved in your horse’s care will contact you once daily to provide an update on the horse’s condition. These calls are typically made in the afternoon, provided the horse is not experiencing an acute or critical issue.

While we strive to have the same staff members care for your horse throughout its stay, please note that due to shift rotations, night duties, and teaching responsibilities, the veterinarian in charge may occasionally change. However, our veterinary team works collaboratively, and all clinicians responsible for your horse’s care are fully informed of its condition and treatment plan within their area of specialty.

In the event of a significant change in your horse’s condition, we will contact you as soon as possible. Please be aware that if urgent medical attention is needed, our first priority is to administer the necessary treatment immediately—communication with the owner will follow promptly thereafter.

For your privacy and to ensure accurate information, only the attending veterinarian or designated student may provide updates on your horse’s condition. Other staff members are not authorized to discuss patient details.
